Orchestral Compositions(Modern Classical)

Concerto for Three Saxophones & Symphony Orchestra in 3 movements approx. 23 minutes scored for large symphony orchestra first performed at the Freiburg Festival in June 1987, and broadcast live with the Hannover Radio Symphony Orchestra in October 1987.
1st Movement features alto saxophone
2nd Movement features tenor saxophone
3rd Movement features soprano saxophone

Close to the Edge – scored for jazz quintet and symphony orchestra with alto sax and guitar
Les Barricades Mysterieuses – for jazz quintet & symphony orchestra with soprano sax & guitar

Concerto No. 1. for Saxophone Quartet & String Ensemble
in 4 movements
Commissioned by the Apollo Saxophone Quartet
premiered Feb.13th 2004.Wolverhampton

‘Mirages’ Concerto No. 2. for Saxophone Quartet & String Ensemble
Commissioned by Camerata Berne
premiered in Stuttgart on April 9th 2004, Swiss premiere took place in 2005 on April 28th
in Zurich, with further performances in Ludwigshafen on March 21st, and May 1st 05 in Bern

Tuba Concerto No.4 in 3 movements
Scored for Eb Tuba & Big Band
Recorded by the NDR Bigband in Hamburg, March 2004, and performed at the Braunschweig Classix Festival in September 2006.
James Gourlay performed it at the Royal Northern College of music, as part of the    Brass Festival, January 2006, recorded by BBC Radio 3.  A further performance is planned by James Gourlay at the 2007 Glasgow International Jazz Festival.


Taking No Prisoners’– scored for bass marimba and grand piano
4 mins approx - premiered by Simone Rebello in June.2003

‘The Fly ‘– vocal female voice and septet, lyrics by William Blake

’Three Saxophone Quartets:
(recorded Dec.2003 by the Apollo Saxophone Quartet) due to be released on the Celestial Harmonies label. Printed music will be available.Saxophone Quartet No. 1 in 5 movements – premiered Brighton Festival, May, 2001 commissioned by the Apollo SQ and the Brighton Festival Saxophone Quartet No.2 ‘From Darkness into Light” based on colours, in 6 movements- premiered at the Purcell Room, London’s Southbank, Nov 2002

5.’RHYTHMS OF THE GODS’ – 10 movements scored for percussion, saxophone
doubling clarinet and recorder, and grand piano. Based on the rhythms and modes
of ancient Greek music, this was originally written for Evelyn Glennie, and was
first performed on Sun, 30th April, 1995, at the Theatre Royal, Norwich, and
subsequently recorded December, 1997. 50 mins approx

Rob Buckland from the Apollo Saxophone Quartet has recently released a CD of his trio Equinox, which includes several movements from ’RHYTHMS OF THE GODS’ and features saxophone, piano, and Simone Rebello on percussion.

Choral works:

‘Love Songs in Age’ 50 minute suite commissioned by BBC Radio 3, based on the poetry of Philip Larkin, and scored for the BBC Singers (24 voices), string quartet, grand piano doubling synth, percussion and saxophone. Broadcast live November,1995 from London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall.

‘Unity Hymn’ scored for full choir with words by Ana Gracey

‘I Yet Remain’ scored for choir, oboe, flute, violin, organ and featuring soprano
sax with lyrics by Coleridge performed at Jesus College Chapel, Cambridge, Feb.1997

‘Journey to a Destination Unknown’, a 50 minute choral piece in 12 movements,
scored for 100 voices community choir ‘Big Sky’, church organ and percussion, based on the poetry of the Indian Poet Rabindranath Tagore, and the English Poet Laureate,
Andrew Motion, performed at St. Andrew’s Hall, Norwich on the 4th & 5th April,`with the
London premiere at St. John’s, Smith Square, London, on Sat. April 12th, 2003. This piece
was commissioned by Norwich Arts Centre.

‘SKAT’ Concerto no. 3 – a piano concerto scored for piano and chamber orchestra. This is one movement passing through different moods lasting approximately 14 minutes. The German premiere took place on July 10th,2005, at the Freiburg Festival.

‘GREEN’ – minimalistic style piece 5mins approx. scored for wind instrument soprano sax/oboe/ descant recorder or flute with strings/piano accompaniment. Recently recorded by Jeremy Polmear for oboe classics.  The album, Melodic Lines also features Diana Ambache on grand piano.

CONCERTO No. 5 - 11 minute concerto for Symphony Orchestra called L’Incrocio (The Crossing) ,based on traffic in Rome.
